I had a blast, and the kids seemed to as well! If you have a chance this summer, I urge you to check it out and have your child take you on a hike.
Yesterday, we had beautiful weather for a fun field trip at Glacial Park in McHenry, Illinois. Our field trip consisted of three parts; a restoration project, a hike, and a presentation of a living map of Glacial Park. During the restoration project, students used loppers to cut down plants that are not native to the area to make room for the native oaks that should inhabit the area. Next, we went on a hike on the 1.8 mile trail. The trail is hilly and rough at times, but we all made it, and learned a lot! During the trail, we stopped at various spots and talked about the land and history of the land. We walked on a Kame, looked at the Nippersink Creek, and learned more about the early settlers. The last part of the field trip was a presentation of a living map of the area. We learned about how the land and ecosystem once was, how settlers changed it, and how the Conservation District is trying to restore the land and ecosystem to what it once was. I had a blast, and the kids seemed to as well! If you have a chance this summer, I urge you to check it out and have your child take you on a hike.
