Last Friday we had a wonderful opportunity to work with GCHS students to help us research for our Science Fair project. It truly was a remarkable day of learning. Each and every student was engaged. We were able to take over the library and use the Chromebooks and library MACS to find information about our science topics. Students also utilized Easybib to create citations on Google Drive. Check out the following link to find nearly 200 pictures of 4th graders researching with GCHS students (https://www.flickr.com/photos/128535385@N04/albums/72157663937611141).

For the new year, we worked hard to write S.M.A.R.T. goals for math, reading, and a personal goal. A S.M.A.R.T. goal is a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. We also came up with strategies to help us reach that goal. Check out our New Year Selfies and S.M.A.R.T. Goals!
Please see below what we are learning about this week in class:
Spelling: We are taking the developmental spelling test this week. Groups may change, so stay tuned next week. Reading: This week in reading, we are focusing on immigration and making inferences. We will be reading both a non-fiction piece about European Immigration and a realistic fiction piece about a girl's journey to America. Our skill is for students to work on drawing conclusions, or inferences, based on prior knowledge and what they read. Writing: Goals are very important. This week we will be writing goals in different subject areas. We will use the SMART goal format. Social Studies: In Social Studies, we will be studying the SE region. If you have any pictures or postcards, please send them in with your child. Math: We are moving on to division. Students should continue to practice basic math facts until mastery is met. Next week I will send more information home about the Science Fair. Also, conference sign-ups with be available on signupgenius.com by the end of the week. Have a wonderful day! The Friday before we left for break, we celebrated with a fun holiday party. I may have slightly over planned...but everyone seemed to have a great time! Thank you to everyone who donated items, as well as our two wonderful moms who came in to help run the party. We played a few games, decorated a fun treat, and created greeting cards. I hope you are all resting and having a wonderful break. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next year!
Yesterday we had another wonderful Read-A-Thon. We had two mystery readers, Mr. Dinsmore and Mr. Melamed. Our mystery readers 'showed' us how to read in a different way. Mr. Dinsmore told an interactive story with a very important lesson at the end. Mr. Melamed read to us a story book with hidden pictures in the illustrations.
We were also able to read to our book buddies, drink some warm hot chocolate, buddy read, listen to stories, and read to ourselves. I think everyone was able to hit their reading goal for the week! Check out the pictures from our fun day of reading! Caution...it may look like we're napping, but we aren't, we are actually reading :) Wow! I was very impressed with the amount of time and effort the students put into reading and creating the sandwich book report. All of the projects have been presented, and students were able to put them in the library to be on display to the whole school. Great job 4th graders!
Every Friday, we have 'book buddies' with Mrs. Scott's 1st grade classroom. During this time, the 4th graders read with the 1st graders or help them complete projects. It is so fun to see the 4th graders interacting with the younger kids. Last week, we helped our 1st grade friends make a snowflake, and then spent the rest of the time reading holiday books. I'm so proud of my 4th graders for going to the library each week and picking out a special book for their book buddy. Take a look at the pictures from last Friday.
This year our read alouds have been much more interactive than what I've done in the past. The first read aloud I read to the class was Flutter by Erin Moulton. The kids absolutely loved this story. Throughout the book, we took notes in our reading notebook. The kids received a good introduction to similes and were able to make inferences about the two main characters, Dawn and Maple. At the end of the book, we also summarized the story. Right now, a few students are working on creating a book trailer for Flutter.
The next read aloud we started is The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. This summer, we were fortunate enough to get a class set donated through Donorschoose.org (thank you to my friends, family, and strangers whom donated). The kids are able to follow along while I am reading. We are having fun reading about Jessie and Evan. We are continuing to use our reading notebooks to take notes and learn about new words. Check out the pictures below. Sandwich book report time! Each student should have picked out a book to read for their sandwich book report. All reports are due, ready to be presented on December 4th. Below are the directions we sent home and the rubric for grading. I cannot wait to see all the creative reports:) Last week we were able to explore the scientific method by conducting an experiment. Our question was what solution will increase a gummy bear's mass and length the most? We had a lot of fun making a hypothesis and then testing out different solutions. We were also able to incorporate math by using a scale to measure the mass in grams and a ruler to measure the length in centimeters. Check out pictures from our week!
